(1 Pet 1:13 NLT) So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the special blessings that will come to you at the return of Jesus Christ.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should! This picture is, of course, taking it to a different level. But this does bring to mind some other areas where this bit of wisdom should be followed. When someone turns 21...what do you hear many of them planning? An old fashion way of putting it is...they are ready to "tie one on!" ... Meaning they are now "of age" and can go get wasted...get drunk. But ya know...just because you can (not against the law) doesn't mean you should. Thinking clearly and having self control is important.
Another scripture that mentions having self control is (Titus 2:11-12 NLT) For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. 12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with self-control, right conduct, and devotion to God.
I know you have heard it said that we are in the world, but not of the world. Just because we live in this world doesn't mean that we have to do what the world does. Notice it says that we are "instructed"...why is it hard for some of us to take instruction and apply it to our lives? Nonetheless...we are instructed to "turn" ... that would indicate that we are going in the wrong direction. We are instructed to turn from "godless living" (leaving God out of how we live our lives) AND "sinful pleasures". Those pleasures may seem okay at the time...but we've been instructed to turn away from those very things. Even though we have to live here...we are to do it with self control and the right conduct....and the most important thing is devotion to God.
When you are devoted to someone ...you are dedicated to making them happy. That is how we are to live our lives...dedicated to making God happy and being consecrated to Him.
